Funding is available for urgent and essential structural repair projects to churches, chapels and meeting houses that are open for regular public worship in the UK, Isle of Man and Channel Islands.

Minimum Value: £10000


Value Notes

Grants for £10,000 and above are available towards major repair projects with estimated costs of at least £100,000 (including VAT and fees). A number of grants of £40,000 and above are also available.


Extended Description

The National Churches Trust was formed in June 2007 after extensive consultation with donors, grant recipients, the Charity Commission and other sector organisations, to fund, protect and support the built heritage of 47,000 churches, chapels and meeting houses throughout the UK.

Funding is available for urgent and essential structural repair projects to churches, chapels and meeting houses in the UK, Isle of Man and Channel Islands.

Applications will be considered from both listed and unlisted Christian places of worship.

Details of programmes and funding in 2019 will be announced later in the year.Our Repair Grants programme offers grants usually of between £5,000 and £40,000 towards the cost of urgent and essential structural repair projects.


Key Criteria

The Trust will consider both listed and unlisted churches, chapels and meeting houses of any age, as long as they are open for public worship.

The Trust will consider places of worship in England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man.

The principle denomination that worships in the building should be a member of, or belong to an umbrella body that is a member of, Churches Together in Britain and Ireland.

Depending on location and if the building is listed, applicants should have received the outcome of an application to English Heritage/Heritage Lottery Fund/CADW/Historic Scotland or the Northern Ireland Environment Agency.

 

Eligible Expenditure

Grants are available for urgent and essential structural repair projects. Priority will be given to repairs to roofs and rainwater goods.


Match Funding Restrictions:

The Trust encourages applicants to apply to other funding bodies and to fundraise locally.


Restrictions

Funding is not available for the following:

  • Works to boundary walls, clocks, bells and monuments.
  • Heating and lighting or general re-ordering.
  • Buildings that are associated with the church or chapel, such as village/church halls or other premises.
