Today the object of the charity is the relief of need, hardship and distress of the inhabitants of Theale and Holybrook.

The Dr. Ellerton's Charity was created in 1899 to make grants to the poor of Theale mainly for fuel and clothing.

Today the object of the charity is the relief of need, hardship and distress of the inhabitants of the area of benefit which is the civil parishes of Theale and Holybrook.1

A wide range of grants have been made and some recent examples include:

  • Domestic appliances
  • Mobility aids
  • School uniform and excursions
  • Emergency funding
  • Toddler and baby equipment

Key Criteria

The charity usually makes grants to individuals or families in the areas of Theale Parish contains the village and surrounding area. Holybrook Parish runs from the M4 in the west as far as Horncastle in the east, adjoining the boundary of Reading Borough Council, and from the A4 Bath Road at Calcot in the north to the Reading/Newbury railway line and Holy Brook in the south.


Application Procedure

Applications for grants should be in writing or on the  application form and should include a short description of circumstances and details of the income to enable the trustees to determine "need, hardship or distress".

An estimate of cost or amount of grant required would be helpful as well as payment details and name of supplier, if appropriate.

Wherever possible, applications should be accompanied by a recommendation from a caring agency confirming the applicant's personal circumstances.
