Co-op Local Community Fund

Status:Open to applications

Grants are available for small, locally based voluntary and community groups to support projects which benefit local communities around Co-op food stores and funeral homes across the UK or the Isle of Man.

Value Notes

No minimum or maximum amount of funding is specified. In the past, applicants have received grants of up to £2,500.

It is anticipated that three projects in each of around 1,500 local communities across the UK will be funded.

Extended Description

The Co-op Local Community Fund is provided by the Co-op as part of a new membership scheme which gives a 5% reward to shoppers on their purchases of Co-op own-brand products and services, together with an additional 1% given to local causes of their choice.

The Charities Aid Foundation will check the applications and handle the grant payments on behalf of the Co-op.

The Co-op is offering the funding as a way to support local groups that are working to benefit the lives of Co-op members and their communities.

Key Criteria

Applications will be accepted from:

  • Registered charities.
  • Small charities registered with HMRC for tax.
  • Registered community amateur sports clubs (CASCs).
  • Churches that are ‘excepted’ charities.
  • Scout and Guide groups.

Preference will be given to organisations with an annual income of less than £1 million a year.

To be eligible for funding, the main activities of the project must:

  • Take place in the UK or Isle of Man.
  • Not finish before October 2017.
  • Meet the Co-operatives values of self-help, self-responsibility, democracy, equality, equity and solidarity. (In the tradition of their founders, Co-operative members believe in the ethical values of honesty, openness, social responsibility and caring for others.)

Eligible Expenditure

Funding is available for projects which benefit local communities centred around Co-op food stores and funeral homes. Eligible projects will make the best use of the funding available to create the greatest possible benefit for their community.

Previous funding has been used to purchase vehicles and renovate a library’s young adult section to create a safe, vibrant space where isolated and disadvantaged young people can get together, study and learn new skills.

Funding is not available for the following:

  • Solely for the purpose of paying for salaries or the running costs of an organisation.
  • Projects that should legally be carried out by a public authority.
  • Donations to other organisations.
