Funding is provided by ChurchCare which is the Church of England's national resource to support parish churches and cathedrals to care for their buildings.

The grants are offered in partnership with The Wolfson Foundation.

The Fund supports essential fabric repairs in architecturally or historically significant Anglican churches in the UK.


Eligibility Criteria

Anglican churches in the UK are eligible to apply. The church must be listed either Grade I or Grade II*.

Eligible Expenditure

Funding is available for the following works:
 
Roof repairs.
Masonry repairs.
Rainwater disposal and drainage.
Works eligible for funding support tend to be identified as Category A or B in the recommendations of a quinquennial report (Category C may be funded exceptionally).
 
Applications for grants are considered on the grounds of the historic and architectural significance of the building and also on a parish's engagement with the history and interpretation of the site/building. The essential nature of the work required and the ability of the parish to contribute financially to the project are also considered.

Match Funding Restrictions

50% of the required funding needs to have been secured as actual or pledged grants prior to application.


Restrictions

The church must not have received a grant from the Wolfson Foundation in the previous five years.

Funding is not available for the following:

  • Any work that has been completed by the time an offer may be made.
  • Installation of facilities, such as toilets and disabled access.
  • Any works arising from a quinquennial inspection identified as Category D or less.
  • Professional fees.
  • Renewal of church heating and lighting.
  • Repairs to bells, organs and clock mechanisms.
  • VAT recovery.

Application Procedure

There are two application deadlines each year, in spring and autumn, with grants awarded in June and December respectively.

Applications are made using the online application process available on the Churchcare website.

The following documents must be submitted in support of an application:

  • Summary description of proposed works. The form is available to download from the ChurchCare website.
  • Statement of most recently audited annual church accounts.
  • Supporting letter from the Archdeacon addressed to Diana Coulter or proof of grant of Faculty.
  • Latest quinquennial inspection report.
  • High resolution photographs of the exterior and interior of the church (as separate jpg files).
  • Plan and/or elevation of the church building clearly indicating the location of the proposed works (in pdf format).
  • Grant offer or other letter as appropriate from national heritage body - HLF or English Heritage for churches in England, CADW in Wales, Historic Scotland in Scotland, and DoENI in Northern Ireland.
